Eabametoong First Nation takes key step forward toward a new water treatment plant

12/08/2017

OTTAWA, Dec. 8, 2017 /CNW/ - The Government of Canada is pleased to support Eabametoong First Nation on the awarding of a contract to design and construct a new water treatment plant in their community.

When completed, the new water treatment plant will eliminate a long-term drinking water advisory that has been in place since 2001.

The Government of Canada is investing more than $12 million towards the project, which has been awarded to Penn-Co Construction Canada (2003) Ltd.

Work is scheduled to begin immediately and has a target completion date of early 2019.

Quotes
"I am pleased to see this project move forward in Eabametoong First Nation. This water treatment plant will give its residents ready access to clean, safe drinking water, something they have been denied for too long."

The Honourable Jane Philpott,
Minister of Indigenous Services

"Clean drinkable water will be returning to Eabametoong for the first time in almost two decades. Those who have lived their whole lives without being able to drink water straight from the tap will have their first glass of water a little over a year from now. We are looking forward to that day."
