Limelight Networks Automates IPv6 Enablement for New and Existing Customers

TEMPE, Ariz., June 4, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Limelight Networks, Inc. (Nasdaq:LLNW) today announced that it will offer IPv6 support as part of Limelight's content delivery service. As the world celebrates World IPv6 Day by turning on IPv6, Limelight's offering supports customers' ongoing transition to the next generation Internet protocol.

"The 21st century web is growing and it is being built on IPv6," said Nathan Raciborski, Chief Technology Officer, Limelight Networks. "There is a real risk to customers around business continuity as the IPv4 Internet starts fading. The rapidly diminishing number of IPv4 addresses will limit the number of end users and devices that connect to an organization's digital presence. Having built one of the world's ten largest networks, we understand how critical a customer's digital presence is to their business. We are doing our part in speeding the transition by ensuring that all customers, particularly subscriber networks and content providers, are IPv6 enabled, at no charge."

Limelight Networks first introduced IPv6 support for its content delivery services in 2009. The company has been enabling IPv6 access to government public facing web properties for the last two years, including NASA, in accordance with the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) mandate to have all public services IPv6 enabled by the end of 2012.

The web is at a tipping point as the number of addresses available in IPv4 rapidly run out due to the explosion in the number of people, devices, and web services on the Internet. Already, Asia has run out of IPv4 addresses and experts have predicted that Europe will run out next.1 IPv6, the next-generation Internet protocol that provides more than 340 trillion, trillion, trillion addresses, will support the continued growth of Internet globally for years to come.

"Diminishing IP addresses should not be the only reason CIOs should be making their transition plans now," continued Raciborski. "There's real concern around ensuring a cost-effective transition. Even if your organization has all the IPv4 addresses it needs, you will soon have to coexist with many more IPv6 users, and to try to accommodate them without a considered migration plan could result in service interruptions and unplanned costs."

In celebration of World IPv6 Day on June 6, 2012, major ISPs, home networking equipment manufacturers, and web companies including Limelight are coming together to permanently enable IPv6 for their products and services.

Limelight Networks'IPv6 capabilities include:

  • Dual-stack (IPv4/IPv6) on the content delivery servers
  • Native IPv6 routing across all network elements
  • Full IPv6 routing table in all locations
  • Full IPv6 Domain Name Services (DNS)
  • IPv6 peering at IPv6 enabled internet exchanges as well as private network interconnects
